Meet Portillo's General Manager, Shannon Smith! Blog Title

Portillo’s is a growing brand, and it’s important to us that our Team Members grow with us. We arm them with the skills and knowledge to foster their growth and have practices in place to help them develop in their careers—which was the trajectory of Portillo’s General Manager Shannon Smith’s career. Please take a moment to read about Shannon’s growth and what she’s learned along the way as she progressed from working as a restaurant manager to a general manager!

How long have you been with Portillo’s and what made you come work for us?

I have been with Portillo’s for 5 years and 9 months.  I came to work for Portillo’s because at my former employer I no longer felt valued. I was dedicating so much of myself to not feel appreciated. I had many experiences with Portillo’s culture from eating there growing up. I thought to myself how fun it would be to work in such a high energy environment. I knew I made the right choice when I was having fun again while working!

What do you love about Portillo’s?

The family atmosphere for sure. I also love that every day is the same yet different. When rockin’ on the line, there is no better feeling than watching the employees work together to get the bags out!

What was your first position here and what position did you get promoted to?

I was hired in as a Restaurant Manager. After 2 years, I was promoted to Assistant General Manager which I held that position until September of 2020. Six months ago, I was promoted to General Manager.

What do you love about your position?

I love when I have coaching moments with my team and I see the look on their faces when they just get it. I also love that I get a chance to interact with so many different people each day.

What advice would you give to someone at Portillo’s looking to move up?

The opportunities for moving up are endless with Portillo’s. The key is to remain focused and keep your eye on the goal. The results you achieve are a direct reflection of the amount of effort you put in. If you want it, you can get it! Spend time asking questions and working side by side with the person in the seat you want!

Where do see yourself growing in this company?

I really love training and watching people grow. One day, I could see myself growing into a position in the training department.
