MORE: In 1963, Dick Portillo invested $1,100 into a small trailer to open the first Portillo’s hot dog stand in Villa Park, IL, which he called “The Dog House.” Years later, Portillo’s has grown to include restaurants in more than 70 locations across 10 states. The Chicago-based restaurant is best known for its Chicago-style hot dogs, Italian beef sandwiches, char-grilled burgers, fresh salads and famous chocolate cake.
Portillo’s Chicago-style Hot Dogs feature a beef frank served with mustard, relish, freshly chopped onions, sliced red ripe tomatoes, celery salt, kosher pickle and sport peppers piled onto a perfectly steamed poppy seed bun. Chicagoans refer to this as “dragging the dog through the garden.”
Another iconic menu offering is Portillo’s Italian beef, which is slow-roasted for four hours before being thinly sliced and served on freshly baked French bread. Guests can then opt to have it “dipped” in hot gravy made with Portillo’s homemade blend of seasonings that they have been perfecting for more than 50 years, or have it served “dry” with just a hint of gravy. Of course, Portillo’s Italian beef tastes best topped with its homemade, oven-roasted sweet peppers or hot giardiniera peppers.
In addition, Portillo’s famous homemade, fluffy chocolate cake is a true crowd pleaser. Baked fresh each morning in restaurant, each double-layer chocolate cake is generously iced with two pounds of rich, chocolate frosting. This decadent cake also serves as the key ingredient for the company’s a one-of-a-kind Chocolate Cake Shake that combines its delicious, thick shakes with an entire slice of its decadent chocolate cake.
Finally, Portillo’s Home Kitchen is the company’s fast-growing catering business and allows the company to Portillo’s ships food to all 50 states via Portillos.com.
