Paul Vanderbleek started his career at Portillo's 7 years ago as a restaurant manager and through a continuous focus on learning, has moved up to overseeing several restaurants in the northwest suburbs of Illinois market.
How long have you been with Portillo’s and what made you come work for us?
It will be 7 years in August. I interviewed without much knowledge about the company, but Luigi Ranieri [Portillo's senior plant operations manager] really sold it to me.
What do you love about Portillo’s?
I love that there is always someone willing to help. As I have grown with Portillo's, there have been times where I have been overwhelmed or just plain lost — when I have asked for help, I have received it in a way that developed me. I have never felt judged.
What was your first position here and what position did you get promoted to?
I was an RMIT. I was promoted to AGMIT in week 5 of training. I then was promoted to General Manager of Portillo's of Rockford, Illinois after 2 years and finally, I was promoted to overseeing operations at multiple units as Market Manager last May.
What do you love about your position?
I love the opportunity to develop people at lots of different levels. In my role, supporting all team members at all levels is my responsibility.
What advice would you give to someone at Portillo’s looking to move up?
Be patient. Find a mentor — make sure the mentor is willing to give honest and constructive feedback that you may not want to hear. Also, I realize that learning is only one part of the process, exposure takes time.
Where do you see yourself growing in this company?
I continue to grow. I see myself getting better every day in my current role and seeing what opportunities open.
