Veteran Story: Theo Thompson Blog Title

Theo Thompson, Staff Sergeant, US Marines and Portillo’s General Manager

As I reflect on my 10 years served in the United States Marine Corps, I am so grateful for the leadership and development training I received. The Core Values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment were instrumental in my ability to handle the adversity and challenges of preparing Marines for Mission Readiness.

I see so many similarities from my time in service to everyday restaurant operations at Portillo’s, and it is the reason I am so passionate about the restaurant industry. Like my time in the Marine’s, Portillo’s has people from all backgrounds, and our jobs as restaurant leaders is to get everyone to work together and believe in one mission. The sole difference? I have traded rounds down range for ever-dogs and Italian Beef sandwiches.

It is great be part of an organization that instills and lives similar values as I was brought up in during my time of service, and although I will never forget my Marine Corps Core Values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment, now they are enhanced by the Portillo’s values of Family, Greatness, Energy, Fun.

Although the vernacular has changed, the foundations and pillars of leadership have not, and as we approach Veteran’s Day to honor all the men and women who have served this Nation, my hope is to foster an environment that will bring more of these great military leaders into our Portillo’s Family.

Semper Fidelis.
