Meet Alma: Team Member Relations Coordinator Blog Title

How long have you been with Portillo’s and what made you come work for us?

I’ve been with Portillo’s since May 8th 1994 – 29 years and 9 months.

I came to visit family for a few months and after arriving I turned 16 and decided to work while I was here. I saw the Bolingbrook location was hiring, so I applied.

What do you love about Portillo’s?

Everything – The Food, the culture, the history, and especially the people (my coworkers).

What was your first position here and what position did you get promoted to?

I was hired for front cash. A few months later I was promoted to Instructor (Team Lead)

What is your current role is and what do you do in your role?

In July of 2022, I was asked to transfer from the Benefits Dept. to the Team Member Relations Team. I was told that I could learn and grow in Team Member Relations, and they were correct. In Benefits, I would speak to many of our Team Members and help them with their benefits needs and their leave of absences. At times some of the Team Members would talk to me, confide in me of their personal problems, whether it was of themselves or family. Many of these conversations would be over the phone. I was happy I could be a lending ear and just listen to them. I get to visit our restaurants and sit with Team Members and resolve any concerns they have. Sometimes I even get to jump on the line and help. It brings back old memories of the days when I was working at the restaurant. You never forget, it’s like riding a bike. When I sit with some of the Team Members, I share my history with Portillo’s and how I started in the restaurants as a cashier and moved up to Instructor, Crew Chief, then transferred to the Restaurant Support Center. Portillo’s has helped me develop and given me the opportunity to grow. This position can be stressful at times, but in the end, I know I’m helping our Team Members have a great work environment and especially letting them know we at the Restaurant Support Center are here for you, we have their backs! That to me is rewarding and in my almost 30 years with Portillo’s; Portillo’s is my second family, and I wouldn’t change anything.

What do you love about your position?

Talking to and helping the team members. Sometimes our team members just need someone to talk to or hear them out.

What advice would you give to someone at Portillo’s looking to move up?

Go for it!! There’s always an opportunity to grow with Portillo’s but you are the one that needs to want it and make it happen.

Where do see yourself growing in this company?

I see myself growing, developing more skills and knowledge in Team Member Relations. Taking on more responsibility. Making a difference for our team members, making them feel like family.
